Articulate and Exaggerate!

There are some DONT'S when speaking

Don't say "I dunno"
Do say "I don't know"
Don't say "Probly"
Do say "Probably"
Don't say "Gonna"
Do say "Going to"
Don't say "Cancha"
Do say "Can't you"

There are some DO'S when speaking

Do say your words clearly using correct vowel
sounds as well as consonants!

Do Practice this tongue-twister:

A tree toad loved a she-toad
Who lived up in a tree.
He was a two-toed tree toad
But a three-toed toad was she.

The two toed tree toad tried to win
The three-toed she-toad's heart,
For the two-toed tree toad loved the ground
That the three-toed tree toad trod.

But the two-toed tree toad tried in vain.
He couldn't please her whim.
From her tree toad bower
With her three-toed power
The she-toad vetoed him.

Fulfill your mission as an empowered Toastmaster who achieves excellence in a supportive and positive environment. Articulate and exaggerate on your road to refinement!

Another Fabulous Speech-a-thon!

Hello Fellow Toasties!

We had another fabulous Speech-a-thon in our Cottonwood Toastmasters club. We are having so much fun with these that we will have them monthly from now on. Maybe you can join us at the next one!

Here we have Anne giving her speech about house noises. There are the drip drip drip sounds that come from the faucets, the squeaky  boards and the chirping birds. As Anne remembered her mother who was deaf in one ear, she said "I am thankful to have ears to hear with." Me too Anne, and I do love the chirping birds and even those squeaky boards!

This is Andy, he is one of our newest Toasties. Getting a little assistance from our Power Point Pro Leo, Andy prepares to share a demonstration with us that he will be giving at work. You did a great job Andy! So glad to have you with us in our club.

Hi Anne, Sally and Marny! We see you have been snacking and enjoying the moment! We always have delicious foods at our meetings to tempt the palate and satisfy the hunger. Talking about hunger, Sally presented us with a wonderful speech about eating clean for our health. She is a gifted Yoga instructor as well as an informative and educational public speaker.

Our amazing and talented Marian. She was one of the timers at the event.
You did a fantastic job Marian! We are lucky to have you in our group.

Merle and Marny, you two are such devoted club members! Merle is our current Sgt. at Arms and he always does and great job getting things set up and prepared so we can have a smooth running meeting. Marny was our Toastmaster for the day. We are lucky to have both of you hard working Toasties!

Cottonwood Toastmasters, the place to be where you can learn  public speaking and leadership skills while developing life long friendships!

Our Club's First Speech-A-Thon

One of our amazing club members, Laurie Rangel DTM, organized a "Speech-A-Thon" for our Cottonwood Toastmasters members who wanted to get a few speeches accomplished FAST. At our event we did the following:

Opening remarks by Speech-A-Thon Chair person Laurie
First speech introduced by their evaluator
Speech
Next!

It was so fast, easy, and FUN!! We had refreshments to nibble on while we listened, then we had a short break half way through the meeting. Our meeting lasted for two hours. Were we bored? Not in the least. And here is why:

1. We have a supportive group
2. We have respect for each other
3. We have amazing talent and speakers who teach us as they grow and learn
4. We enjoy being together and have become friends

Some of the things we learned about from the speakers were:

1. The importance of alkaline foods and Kangen water
2. Things we don't know that we don't know! Great speech about learning from topics speakers speak about, and acquiring leadership skills.
3. Things seem big when we are small and small when we are big!
4. Rainbow herbicide and the Vietnam war: fascinating speech by one of our own Cottonwood Toastmasters Veterans. We applaud and honor you Merle!
5. Animals, their fears and need for loving care.
6. Walmart through the years
7. Healing after 35 years: the healing process and return to Vietnam.

Applause, Applause, Applause!
Well done Cottonwood Toastmasters!

Holiday

'Tis the holiday season and for the first time since I have been a member of the Cottonwood Toastmaster's club, we had a holiday this past Monday. It felt strange not going to meeting and participating. I thought since there would be no club entry for this weeks blog, that some interesting tid-bits on effective speaking would be appropriate. The following comments on "Empowerment" are taken from the book "The Challenge of Effective Speaking" by Rudolph F. Verderber

Public Speaking is Empowerment!

First, public speaking is a form of empowerment because mastery of public speaking skills enables you to communicate even complex information in a way that all members of an audience can understand.

Second, public speaking is a form of empowerment because mastery of public speaking skills enables you to influence people's attitudes and behavior.

Third, public speaking is a from of empowerment because mastery of public speaking skills will help you in your search for a job.

Fourth, public speaking is a form of empowerment because mastery of public speaking skills is necessary to help you achieve positions of leadership.

***Teaching tip: A primary teaching strategy is role modeling. Make sure your lectures are organized and employ good introductions, strong previews, and use of transitions. Model strong delivery skills, such as volume, posture, movement, eye contact and rate.

To increase you public speaking skills and become empowered, join us at Cottonwood Toastmasters. We would love to have you! Cottonwood Toastmasters meets every Monday 12:00 to 1:15 at the Cottonwood Village, 201 E Mingus Ave. Guests are welcome.
